The Sunday Funnies

On Thursday, Savvy came home with very exciting news. Brandon Mull, author of the "Fablehaven" book series, had been at her school signing autographs and such. Savvy had actually known about his visit the day before -- and her teacher had told them they could bring stuff for him to sign -- stuff meaning Fablehaven memorabilia.

Did Savvy let the fact that we don't own any of his books stop her from getting his autograph? I think not -- she's made of sterner stuff than that. A real go-getter. So, what did she take for him to sign?
Oh, just her "Cat Fancy" magazine

{I know, I know. It's wrong on so many levels--but, first Loyal Readers, I promise! It's a free subscription- we don't actually pay for the magazine. Second--about half way through the book signing, Savvy's principal announced to the entire school - Mr. Mull would only be signing Fablehaven stuff -- nothing else -- so at least my kid wasn't the only one bringing silly things to sign--and thankfully this happened before she stood in his line with the ever popular Cat Fancy.}

P.S. Umm, hey Mr. Mull--in case you're out there surfing middle aged mom's blogs--in my defense, last summer I tried to get my 12 year old daughter into your books--but she was already enthralled with the immensely popular vampire book--"Twilight". Now (thanks to strategic product placement at elementary schools across UT) you've got a real Cat Fancy Fablehaven fan on your hands. As a matter of fact, I just bought your very first book on Friday--and Savvy and her twin brother are already fighting over who gets to read it first.

Episode 232--Rescue 9-1-1: A Peculiar People

{The following 9-1-1 call is maybe a little embellished real. It is a true story of a dramatic rescue. Whenever possible the actual people involved have helped me reconstruct the events as they happened.}

911 operator: "911 operator what is the nature of your emergency?"

Innocent Passerby: "Umm, I just drove by a church -- and there is a teenager breaking into one of the windows."

911 operator: "We'll dispatch a police officer to the scene of the crime. Thank you for your call."

Innocent Passerby: "Your welcome--just trying to have something to gossip about to my neighbors do my civic duty and all."

911 operator to police station: "We've got a potential 211 at an LDS church building. It appears a teenager is crawling through the window of a church -- possible backup needed."

Police Officers enter the building - armed and ready for whatever they may encounter.

Giggling & talking, mingled with children playing--is heard from the East side of the building.

Police #1 whispers to Police #2: "Proceed with Caution!"

Knock, Knock, Knock - on the nursery room door.

A friendly RS President answers the door.

Police Officer #1: "Ma'am, is everything okay in here? We've had a report of a teenager breaking in through this window."

RS President: "Errrr. Everything is fine. Although, about 30 minutes ago, we did have a 8 year old & 5 year old sneak out of the windows during our scripture class nursery."

Police Officer #1: "We're going to secure the premises just to be sure -- and you really should keep a better eye on your children lock up the building while you have your Relief Society meetings."

As the RS presidency follows the police officer to lock up the open doors, they see not one--not two -- but three (one who happens to be exiting the men's restroom) of Utah's finest protecting and serving a seemingly innocent--yet obviously corrupt--church building. Well done thou good and faithful servants. Well done.

Memo to self: Lock the windows when that kid *Timmy comes to nursery.

*Names have been changed to protect the naughty innocent.

Stories of the Old and Decrepit

For some reason this morning we were running incredibly late--so late that I ended up taking the twins all the way to school - instead of just dropping them at the corner. In doing this, I gained some valuable information about myself--I'm blind as a bat and my hearing is shot.

On the way to school, we passed a lady in a lovely vehicular (I mention this only because it's hard not to notice other niceties when your purple pleasure of a mini-van is wheezing a high pitched noise en route). She appeared to be gussied up - with her hair done - kind of that flippy style.

Anyway - as we passed the darling girl, Aussie said, "Boy, someone is having a bad hair day!"

"Aussie!" I laughed, assuming he meant me (see my last Sunday Funnies if you need clarification).

"I'm not talking about you mom," he said [a miracle I suppose]. "That lady has crazy hair! Like you did the other day."

Hmmm. I thought she looked fine. Maybe I need new glasses?

Still laughing, I pulled into the carpool lane at the school. Down the lane, was a teacher directing traffic and Savvy said, "See that teacher? She's Mrs. Isaac-Hawk."

"Her name is Mrs. Issac-Hawk? That's a different name," I replied--assuming she was a women's libber married woman with the fancy hyphenated name.

"No, mom! I don't know what her real name is - we just call her "Mrs. Eyes-Like-A-Hawk because she always catches everyone riding their scooters when they aren't supposed to."
{Guess while I'm making that appointment for new glasses I'd better throw in an appointment for a hearing test.}

Fairytale of the Tag

Loyal Readers: Questions have been posed about the significance of the WC tag.
(Just know that you asked for it)

and now...without further ado...the true and unabridged story of the Tag.

Once upon a time (about 6 years ago), some "darling ladies" (known as the DL's) went on a scrapbooking weekend trip to Snowflake, AZ. No one really knows how it all came about -- but it was decided upon that each of them would make a tag that represented their favorite things.

They each made 5 of the same tag and then exchanged them on their weekend excursion. (They attached them to huge binder rings - and everyone received a wooden initial of their first name --magical!) They also exchanged a few small gifties -- matching pj's, purses and the like.

Fast forward to WC 2008 - the DL's gifties have snowballed into something so huge it could give one heart palpitations just thinking about it (this year it involved-darling matching pj's, sweet matching hoodies, spectacular matching purses, gorgeous matching necklaces and a cute scrappy journal).

The DL's also still exchange tags -- usually they have a theme (favorite recipes, favorite friendship quote, sometimes they just make one to attach to their Christmas/Birthday gifts) -- this year for WC it was girls choice.

So, you see, the tags really just represent a memento from wherever the Darling Ladies are gathered together to enjoy one anothers company (kind of like a homemade souvenir)--and provides solid proof that DL's really can live happily ever after (as long as they get the occasional girls weekend).

The End

The Sunday Funnies

On Monday, Jay was studying her spelling words.

"Mom?" she hollered from the other room. "What does de-spice-able mean?" she asked.

"De-spice-able? Ummm, lack of spice, maybe?"

"Mom, c'mon--I really need to know what de-spice-able means," she sassed.

"I've never heard of the word. Look it up in the dictionary," I sassed back.

Apparently, dad trumped the dictionary. When Jay asked DH what "de-spice-able" meant -- he requested the spelling list from her and began to laugh.

"You mean despicable? Let me use that in a sentence for you. I think it is despicable that you thought despicable was de-spice-able."

*****************************************************************
Thursday and Friday morning were extremely busy as I tried to get myself and the kids ready for school (so me and the girls could be out the door and on our way to BYU by 8 a.m). Hair was hurriedly brushed, clothes were quickly put on, lunches were lickety-split packed--and makeup was done in the carpool lane on the way to Provo.

On Friday morning, as we dropped the kids off at school, Aussie kindly asked, "Mom? Did you brush your hair today?"

Confidently? I answered, "Yes. And if you want Santa to come this year you'll tell me how great it looks."

Waxing Poetic on WC

Good times were abounding
Friends & shopping were astounding
Spiritual speakers were grounding

Prizes & Tags were wonderous
Late night bonding was marvelous
Women's Conference was fabulous

Alas, it couldn't last forever
Our DH's and Kid's would say "Oh please! NEVER!"
(I think my tribute is rather cheesy clever)
